Astrophotography Practice Data Ready for Processing!

Welcome to the Practice data archive. This page is for you to dive straight into the creative and technical art of post-stacking astrophotography without the long night of imaging. All the data is still packed into the dark pixels, waiting for you to perform the magic of stretching and enhancement.

Downloadable Stacked Master Files

All files are provided as high-bit-depth TIFF files to retain the full dynamic range of the data. You’ll need to open these in your processing software and apply an initial non-linear stretch to make the target visible.

1. M8 – The Lagoon Nebula

DetailSpecifications
Processing ChallengeThe Tulip Nebula is a bright emission nebula that glows red because it’s energized by a massive, hot star nearby, causing the hydrogen gas to light up like a floral pattern. The Tulip Nebula is a bright emission nebula that glows red because it’s energized by a massive, hot star nearby, causing the hydrogen gas to light up like a floral pattern.

2. IC 2118- The Witch Head Nebula

DetailSpecifications
Processing ChallengeThe Witch Head Nebula is entirely different; it’s a spooky reflection nebula—a dust cloud that doesn’t generate its own light. Instead, it appears blue because it reflects the light of Rigel, the brilliant star in Orion. Its eerie shape is why it earned its name.

3. SH2-101 – The Tulip Nebula

DetailSpecifications
Processing ChallengeFinally, the Lagoon Nebula is a huge, active star-forming factory. This beautiful pink and red cloud contains the material for countless new stars and is visually divided by a dark channel of dust, giving it the appearance of a celestial lagoon.
